Gasface is an ideas and solutions boutique based in France.
Career journalists and interactive media consultants we have worked on various projects within the spectrum of digital and analog media for clients locally, nationally and internationally. We specialize in crafting rich multimedia experiences for thriving and up and coming institutions, businesses, and entrepreneurs.

WE ARE
Graduates from the DIY school, Nicolas Venancio and Mathieu Rochet made their way into webdocumentaries by doing radio, websites, producing events and publishing their own magazine. A crossmedia approach they’ve also applied as consultants while working with Lyon’s City Hall or international festivals (l’Original, Quais du Polar).
A passion for genuine experiences and unfiltered information would eventually lead Gasface’s founders to more field trips and ultimately, making documentary pieces. The journalistic quality of the magazine received overall praises by the likes of Canal +, France Inter or Technikart. In fact, scope, journalism skills and practical experience are the reasons why Arte came to Nicolas Venancio and Mathieu Rochet, with a desire to find new ways to tell stories.
Nominated for Best Webdocumentary at 2010’s IDFA, New York Minute was the answer to Arte’s request.

WE DID
Nicolas Venancio and Mathieu Rochet were the first authors to ever get CNC’s new media subsidy without the backing of a production company. By making an early partnership with Canon, they’ve been able to integrate technology into their editorial concept. Their ability to write and direct films, added to their take on community management, would finally grant New York Minute the largest success Arte.tv has ever had outside the French borders (Germany, USA, Japan…).
Whereas journalists focused on the “nonlinear narrative” structure, they took a fresh approach by choosing the best tools the Internet would provide to serve their documentary purpose. The result was a two-way access to the cultural fact that is the New York Minute:
- A 6-part miniseries event shot in 21 days and considered the best viral series by the most influential blogs in the US.
- An interactive map based on multimedia participation the first territorial encyclopedia ever (a concept now copied by Redbull in the urban art field).
When every other webdocumentary would rely on « old media » PR to get recognition, NYM took journalists out of the loop and worked directly towards online communities, first with a couple of viral teasers to get the « minute » notion across, then with a tutorial clip entitled NY Minute for Dummies, and later with a committed sense of community management, backed by a large number of specialized blogs and a vast social network.
Convinced that the « webdocumentary » term itself was only marketable among film professionals and journalists, Gasface prevented alienating the audience by promoting New York Minute as a miniseries.
Sometimes, the best way to get someone watching a documentary, is to convince them they’re not watching one… Half a million viewers can’t be wrong!

WE DO
As webdocumentary makers, we design the user interactive journey through stories we are able to write, direct, and spread all over the globe. Being brilliant all-rounder, Gasface is able to provide a complete reflexion on interactive storytelling.
With culture and technology being closely linked in this matter, Gasface is in the unique position to bring solutions and create a documentary within 2 to 6 months. Gasface is now a selfcontained production company: both authors
operate cameras, make interviews and cover the production duties on the field, making their crew the lightest unit possible.
Editor Thomas Vernay, whose work on New York Minute was considered ground-breaking by many medias, covers all aspects of post-production, and Webdesigner Jean-Sebastien Bartos has already done several campaigns for the Council of Europe.
With a unique blend of journalism skills and digital expertise,
Gasface both shapes and creates awareness for today’s audience.
